Color, Emotion, and Creativity: Just the Start
Share
I go through phases when sudden flashes of color appear in my mind... unexpected combinations, exciting new palettes, prints in different colorways. My head seems to work on its own, or maybe these visions come from somewhere else! They often arrive just as I’m about to fall asleep, and I always pray I’ll remember them when I wake up. Most of the times I do, and they find their way into whatever I’m creating at that moment. Sometimes it’s a piece of artwork, and often it was part of the collections I was working on.
Lately, these dreamy visions are back. Colors, colors, colors...
and now I’m imagining how to bring them to life.
The use of color is something I’ve always thought deeply about. As a color lover and as a designer,
an artist, and as the creator of a brand and products that embrace color boldly and unapologetically,
I often encountered not rejection, but a kind of hesitance from viewers or buyers when seeing the
"boldness" of most of my work... I always wondered why.
The way we feel of course is unique, and I don’t judge it at all, but... here is my thought:
Colors are frequencies. They connect directly to our emotions.
I wonder, could we, as individuals, or within a larger social construct, especially in
Western culture cities, avoid color for emotional reasons?
In many parts of society, we’re often expected to blend in and not stand out too much,
(Even in a place like New York, which is supposed to be a creative mecca
where expression is encouraged)
avoiding color in our daily lives (in our clothes, our homes...)
could be a way to "protect" ourselves from our own feelings?
This is a much longer conversation...
and a thought I keep exploring (and dreaming!) about.
For now, this is just a glimpse of an idea I wanted to share with you...
Have you ever caught yourself holding back, whether in how you feel, choose,
buy, or create, when it comes to color?
More on this (!) soon...
